Muhammad: An Example of Moral Corruption and Sexual Deviancy

Continuing from my previous post: Islam: The Religion of Perfect Submission to Muhammad.

I will now show that Muhammad was far from being a case of supreme moral virtue for others to imitate. Rather, he was an example of moral and sexual deviant who needs to be shunned and condemned.

The Quran attests that Muhammad was an imperfect, fallible mortal,

“Or that you have a luxurious mansion, or that you can ascend into the heavens. We will not acknowledge your ascension unless you bring for us a book that we can study.” Say, “Glory be to my Lord. Am I anything other than a human messenger!” S. 17:93

Say, “I am but a human being like you, being inspired that your god is One god. So whoever looks forward to meeting his Lord, then let him promote reforms and not set up any partner in the service of his Lord.” S. 18:110

Say, “I am no more than a human being like you. I am inspired that your god is One god, therefore you shall be upright towards Him and seek His forgiveness. Woe to those who set up partners.” S. 41:6

Whose deity commanded to repent of his sins,

So be patient, for the promise of God is true, and seek forgiveness for your sin, and glorify and praise your Lord at dusk and dawn. S. 40:55

So know that there is no god besides God, and ask forgiveness of your sins and also for the acknowledging men and acknowledging women. God knows your movements and your place of rest. S. 47:19

We have given you a clear conquest. So that God may forgive your present sins, as well as those past, and so that He may complete His blessings upon you, and guide you on a straight path. S. 48:1-2

You shall glorify your Lord’s grace, and seek His forgiveness. He is the Redeemer. S. 110:3

And even rebuked and threatened to humiliate and kill him if he failed to live up to his god’s dictates:

Seek forgiveness from God; God is Forgiver, Compassionate. Do not argue on behalf of those who betray themselves. God does not like those who are betrayers, sinners. S. 4:106-107

God pardons you; why did you grant them leave before it became clear to you who are truthful, and who are lying? S. 9:43

They nearly diverted you from what We inspired to you so that you would fabricate something different against Us, and then they would have taken you as a friend! If We had not made you stand firm, you were about to lean towards them a little bit. Then, We would have made you taste double the retribution in this life and double the retribution in death. Then you would not find for yourself any victor against Us. S. 17:73-75

O you prophet, you shall be aware of God, and do not obey the ingrates and the hypocrites. God is Knowledgeable, Wise. S. 33:1

He has inspired to you and to those before you, that if you set up partners, He will nullify all your work and you will be of the losers. S. 39:65

Had he attributed anything falsely to Us. We would have seized him by the right. Then, We would have severed his life-line. None of you would be able to prevent it. S. 69:44-47

This explains why Muhammad wasn’t certain what Allah would do with him, whether he would save or damn him:

Or do they say, “He fabricated this!” Say, “If I fabricated this, then you cannot protect me at all from God. He is fully aware of what you say. He suffices as a witness between me and you. He is the Forgiver, the Compassionate.” Say, “I am no different from the other messengers, nor do I know what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is inspired to me. I am no more than a clear warner” S. 46:8-9

Say, “I only call on my Lord, and I do not associate anyone with Him.” Say, “I have no power to cause you harm nor to show you what is right.” Say, “No one can protect me from God, and I will not find any refuge except with Him.” It is but an announcement from God, and His messages. Whosoever disobeys God and His messenger, then he will have the fire of hell to dwell eternally therein. Until they see what they are promised, then they will know who has the weakest ally and is least in number. Say, “I do not know if what you are promised is near, or if my Lord will make it distant.” S. 72:20-25

Muhammad was also a horrible moral example since he showed disdain to the blind:

He frowned and turned away. When the blind one came to him. What makes you know, perhaps he is seeking to purify? Or to remember, so the remembrance will benefit him? As for the one who was conceited; To him you attended. Why does it concern you that he does not want to purify? As for the one who came to you seeking. While he was fearful. You were too preoccupied for him. S. 80:1-10

He also lusted after his adopted son’s wife, causing a divorce to occur so that he could then marry her:

You said to the one who was blessed by God, and blessed by you: “Keep your wife and revere God,” and you hid inside yourself what God wished to proclaim. You feared the people, while it was God you were supposed to fear. So when Zayd ended his relationship with his wife, We had you marry her, to establish that there is no wrongdoing for those who acknowledge marrying the wives of their adopted sons if their relationship is ended. God‘s command is always done. S. 33:37

Note how the earliest Muslim scholars explained this passage:

Only after some time Zaid complained to the Prophet regarding what he had suffered with Zainab. The Prophet came to them and admonished here and while he talked to her HE DEVELOPED LIKENESS FOR HER BEAUTY, COUNTENANCE, AND WIT. IT HAPPENED AS ALLAH DECREED. The Prophet then returned AND HAD IN HIS THOUGHT WHAT ALLAH HAD WILLED. Thereafter, the Prophet asked as to how had he been with her? He again complained about her. The Prophet said, “Fear Allah and keep your wife with you” WHILE HE HAD IN HIS HEART SOMETHING ELSE… Then Prophet then came to Zaid and saw Zainab as she was standing – she was beautiful, fair complexioned, and among the best women of Quraish – therefore, the Prophet FELT AN INCLINATION FOR HER and (while leaving) said: “Praise be to Allah who turns the hearts.” Zaid discerned and said: “O Messenger of Allah! Allow me to divorce her for she has haughtiness and is arrogant with me, and her language also hurts me.” The Prophet said, “Hold on to your wife, and fear Allah.” Zaid, however, eventually divorced her. (Muqatil b. Sulaiman, al-Tafsir [Dar ‘Ihya’ al-Turath, Beirut, 1423 AH], Volume 3, pp. 492-494)

According to Yunus b. ‘Abd al-A‘la — Ibn Wahb — Ibn Zayd, who said: The Messenger of God had married Zayd b. Harithah to Zaynab bt. Jahsh, his paternal aunt’s daughter. One day the Messenger of God went out looking for Zayd. Now there was a covering of haircloth over the doorway, but the wind had lifted the covering so that the doorway was uncovered. Zaynab was in her chamber, undressed, AND ADMIRATION FOR HER ENTERED THE HEART OF THE PROPHET. After that happened, she was MADE unattractive to the other man. So he came and said, “Messenger of God, I want to separate myself from my companion.” Muhammad asked: “What is wrong? Has anything on her part disquieted you?” “No, by God,” replied Zayd, “nothing she has done has disquieted me, Messenger of God, nor have I seen anything but good.” The Messenger of God said to him, “Keep your wife to yourself, and fear God.” That is [the meaning of] the Word of God: “And when you said unto him on whom God has conferred favor and you have conferred favor, ‘Keep your wife to yourself, and fear God.’ And you did hide in your mind that which God was to bring to light.” You did hide in your mind [the thought] that “if he separates himself from her, I will marry her.” (Al-Tabari, Jami‘ al-Bayan fi Tafsir al-Qur’an [al-Resalah Publishers, Beirut, 2000], Volume 20, p. 274)

Muhammad also failed to practice what he preached, since he allowed himself to have more wives than what was permitted for his own followers, and could have sex with any woman who chose to give herself to him sexually. He even allowed himself the privilege of ignoring any of his wives and preferring any among them that he so desired, and his wives had no say so in the matter:

O prophet, We have made lawful for you the wives to whom you have already given their dowry, and the one who is committed to you by oath, as granted to you by God, and the daughters of your father’s brothers, and the daughters of your father’s sisters, and the daughters of your mother’s brothers, and the daughters of your mother’s sisters, of whom they have emigrated with you. Also, the acknowledging woman who had decreed herself to the prophet, the prophet may marry her if he wishes, as a privilege given only to you and not to those who acknowledge. We have already decreed their rights in regard to their spouses and those who are still dependants. This is to spare you any hardship. God is Forgiver, Compassionate. You may postpone whom you will of them, and you may receive whom you will. Whomsoever you seek of those whom you have set aside then there is no sin upon you. Such is best that they may be comforted and not grieve, and may all be pleased with what you give them. God knows what is in your hearts. God is Knowledgeable, Compassionate. S. 33:50-51

Here, again, is the historical context of this passage:

(Thou canst defer whom thou wilt of them…) [33:51]. The commentators of the Qur’an said: “This verse was revealed when some of the wives of the Prophet felt jealous [of other co-wives] so much so that they harmed him and asked for increase in their maintenance. The Messenger of Allah did not sleep with them in the same bed for a month until the verse of choice [33:29] was revealed. Allah, exalted is He, commanded him to ask them to choose between this worldly life and the Afterlife. He was commanded to divorce those who chose this worldly life and keep whoever among them chose Allah, glorified is He, and His Messenger as mothers of the believers who will never marry after him. He was also given permission to receive anyone of them he wanted to receive and defer anyone he wanted to defer; they had to be content whether or not he apportioned something for them, and regardless of whether or not he prefers some over the others with regard to the apportioning of provision and the time spent with them. It was all up to him to do as he wished. All of them accepted these terms. However, the Messenger of Allah gave an equal part of maintenance to all his wives, even though Allah, exalted is He, had granted him wide compass [in his dealings with them]”. Abu ‘Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Muzakki informed us> ‘Abd al-Malik ibn al-Hasan ibn Yusuf al-Saqati> Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Halwani> Yahya ibn Ma‘in> ‘Abbad ibn ‘Abbad> ‘Asim al-Ahwal> Mu‘adhah> ‘A’ishah who said: “After the verse (Thou canst defer whom thou wilt of them…) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah used to seek permission from us [to go to another of his wives] when it was the turn of one of us [to spend time with him]”. Mu‘adhah asked her: “What did you use to say?” I used to say: “If this is my turn, I would not prefer anyone else to have you instead of me!” This was narrated by Bukhari> Hibban ibn Musa> Ibn al-Mubarak and also by Muslim> Shurayh ibn Yunus> ‘Abbad; and both ‘Abbad and Ibn al-Mubarak related it from ‘Asim. (Al-Wahidi, Asbab al-Nuzul https://www.altafsir.com/Tafasir.asp?tMadhNo=0&tTafsirNo=86&tSoraNo=33&tAyahNo=51&tDisplay=yes&Page=1&Size=1&LanguageId=2; bold and underline emphasis mine)

Some commentators said: “When the verse of choice [33:29] was revealed, the wives of the Prophet were scared of being divorced. They said to him: ‘O Prophet of Allah, apportion for us whatever you like of your wealth and person; just leave us as we are’. And so this verse was revealed”. ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Abdan informed us> Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Nu‘aym> Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub al-Akhram> Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab> Muhadir ibn al-Muwaddi‘> Hisham ibn ‘Urwah> his father> ‘A’ishah who used to say to the wives of the Prophet: “Does a woman not feel ashamed of offering herself?” And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verse (Thou canst defer whom thou wilt of them and receive unto thee whom thou wilt). ‘A’ishah then said: “I see that your Lord hastens for you what you desire”. This is narrated by Bukhari from Zakariyya ibn Yahya and also by Muslim from Abu Kurayb; both Zakariyya ibn Yahya and Abu Kurayb related it from Abu Usamah who related it from Hisham. (Ibid. https://www.altafsir.com/Tafasir.asp?tMadhNo=0&tTafsirNo=86&tSoraNo=33&tAyahNo=51&tDisplay=yes&Page=2&Size=1&LanguageId=2; bold and underline emphasis mine)

And here are the ahadith which al-Wahidi referenced:

Narrated Aisha: I used to look down upon those ladies who had given themselves to Allah’s Apostle and I used to say, “Can a lady give herself (to a man)?” But when Allah revealed: “You (O Muhammad) can postpone (the turn of) whom you will of them (your wives), and you may receive any of them whom you will; and there is no blame on you if you invite one whose turn you have set aside (temporarily).’ (33.51) I said (to the Prophet), “I feel that your Lord hastens in fulfilling your wishes and desires.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 311 https://www.searchtruth.com/book_display.php?book=60&translator=1&start=0&number=311)

Narrated Muadha: ‘Aisha said, “Allah’s Apostle used to take the permission of that wife with whom he was supposed to stay overnight if he wanted to go to one other than her, after this Verse was revealed:– “You (O Muhammad) can postpone (the turn of) whom you will of them (your wives) and you may receive any (of them) whom you will; and there is no blame on you if you invite one whose turn you have set aside (temporarily). (33.51) I asked Aisha, “What did you use to say (in this case)?” She said, “I used to say to him, ‘If I could deny you the permission (to go to your other wives) I would not allow your favor to be bestowed on any other person.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 6, Book 60, Number 312)

To make matters worse, Muhammad permitted the raping of married captive women and condoned that women be treated like prostitutes by contracting temporary marriages with them:

Also (forbidden are) women already married, except those (captives and slaves) whom your right hands possess. Thus has Allah ordained for you. All others are lawful, provided you seek (them in marriage) with Mahr (bridal money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) from your property, desiring chastity, not committing illegal sexual intercourse, so with those of whom you have enjoyed sexual relations, give them their Mahr as prescribed; but if after a Mahr is prescribed, you agree mutually (to give more), there is no sin on you. Surely, Allah is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise. S. 4:24 Hilali-Khan

Once again, note how the Muslim commentators exegeted the foregoing verse:

And forbidden to you are wedded women those with spouses that you should marry them before they have left their spouses be they Muslim free women or not; save what your right hands own of captured slave girls whom you may have sexual intercourse with even if they should have spouses among the enemy camp but only after they have been absolved of the possibility of pregnancy after the completion of one menstrual cycle… (Tafsir al-Jalalayn https://www.altafsir.com/Tafasir.asp?tMadhNo=0&tTafsirNo=74&tSoraNo=4&tAyahNo=24&tDisplay=yes&UserProfile=0&LanguageId=2; bold emphasis mine)

(And all married women (are forbidden unto you save those (captives) whom your right hands possess) of captives, even if they have husbands in the Abode of War, after ascertaining that they are not pregnant, by waiting for the lapse of one period of menstruation. (It is a decree of Allah for you) that which I have mentioned to you is unlawful in Allah’s Book. (Lawful unto you are all beyond those mentioned) as unlawful, (so that ye seek them) marry (with your wealth) up to four wives; it is also said that this means: so that you buy with your wealth captives; and it is also said that this means: so that you should seek with your money marrying women for an agreed period of time (zawaj al-mut’ah) but the lawfulness of this practice was later abrogated… (Tanwir al-Miqbas min Tafsir Ibn ‘Abbas https://www.altafsir.com/Tafasir.asp?tMadhNo=0&tTafsirNo=73&tSoraNo=4&tAyahNo=24&tDisplay=yes&UserProfile=0&LanguageId=2; bold emphasis mine)

(And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess…) [4:24]. Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Bunani informed us> Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Hamdan> Abu Ya‘la> ‘Amr al-Naqid> Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri> Sufyan> ‘Uthman al-Batti> Abu’l-Khalil> Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri who said: “We had captured female prisoners of war on the day of Awtas and because they were already married we disliked having any physical relationship with them. Then we asked the Prophet about them. And the verse (And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess) was then revealed, as a result of which we consider it lawful to have a physical relationship with them”. Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn al-Harith informed us> ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Ja‘far> Abu Yahya> Sahl ibn ‘Uthman> ‘Abd al-Rahim> Ash‘ath ibn Sawwar> ‘Uthman al-Batti> Abu’l-Khalil> Abu Sa‘id who said: “When the Messenger of Allah captured the people of Awtas as prisoners of war we said: ‘O Prophet of Allah! How can we possibly have physical relationships with women whose lineage and husband we know very well?’ And so this verse was revealed (And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess)”. Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ibrahim al-Farisi informed us> Muhammad ibn ‘Isa ibn ‘Amrawayh> Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sufyan> Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj> ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Umar al-Qawariri> Yazid ibn Zuray‘> Sa‘id ibn Abi ‘Arubah> Qatadah> Abu Salih Abu Khalil> Abu ‘Alqamah al-Hashimi> Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri who reported that on the day of Hunayn the Messenger of Allah sent an army to Awtas. This army met the enemy in a battle, defeated them and captured many female prisoners from them. But some of the Companions of the Messenger were uncomfortable about having physical relations with these prisoners because they had husbands who were idolaters, and so Allah, exalted is He, revealed about this (And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess).

(Al-Wahidi, Asbab al-Nuzul https://www.altafsir.com/Tafasir.asp?tMadhNo=0&tTafsirNo=86&tSoraNo=4&tAyahNo=24&tDisplay=yes&UserProfile=0&LanguageId=2; bold emphasis mine)

Forbidding Women Already Married, EXCEPT FOR FEMALE SLAVES

Allah said…

(Also (forbidden are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess.) The Ayah means, you are prohibited from marrying women who are already married…

(except those whom your right hands possess) except those whom you acquire through war, for you are allowed such women after making sure they are not pregnant. Imam Ahmad recorded that Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri said, “We captured some women from the area of Awtas who were already married, and we disliked having sexual relations with them because they already had husbands. So, we asked the Prophet about this matter, and this Ayah was revealed…

(Also (forbidden are) women already married, except those whom your right hands possess). Consequently, we had sexual relations with these women.” This is the wording collected by At-Tirmidhi An-Nasa’i, Ibn Jarir and Muslim in his Sahih. Allah’s statement…

(Thus has Allah ordained for you) means, this prohibition was ordained for you by Allah. Therefore, adhere to Allah’s Book, do not transgress His set limits, and adhere to His legislation and decrees. (Tafsir Ibn Kathir http://www.alim.org/library/quran/AlQuran-tafsir/TIK/4/24; capital and underline emphasis mine)

With the foregoing in perspective, is this the man that Muslims want to emulate? Is Muhammad really a sublime example of moral virtue for all people throughout all time? Which moral and rational person would want to obey such a messenger who failed to practice what he preached, lusted after married women, including his own daughter-in-law, permitted captive women to be raped, even married ones whose husbands were still alive, and went as far as to prostitute them under the guise of temporary marriage?

Far from loving, emulating and/or obeying such a deviant, Muhammad needs to exposed and condemned for the immoral charlatan that he truly was.
